Historic Sutter Creek Tour
Discover the Old West on the main streets of Amador County as you walk through historic gold mining towns.
Visit Historic Sutter Creek
Sutter Creek is truly the heart of the California Gold Country.
John Sutter made camp here, trying to avoid the gold rush crowds, but miners soon spilled in and made it a town.
Mining boomed and then faded, making way for today’s contagion: wine fever.
In and around Sutter Creek you can mosey along sidewalks shaded by filigreed balconies. Sutter Creek is 100% walkable.
A simple stroll down Main Street leads you to quaint Bed and Breakfast Inns, wine tasting, locally-owned boutiques and galleries, antique stores, Victorian residential neighborhoods and tiny beautiful churches.
In 1851, where Hotel Sutter now stands, the American House hotel was built and became very well-known under the direction of Dwight Crandall.
On September 9, 1865 when a fire swept through Sutter Creek’s business district burning the hotel to the ground.
The hotel was later rebuilt and has operated over the years as the American Exchange Hotel,
the Belotti Inn and now under new-ownership and management, Hotel Sutter.
The hotel’s rich past still comes alive through its brick structure that takes on the sophisticated elegance and amenities designed for today’s modern guest.
Established in the height of the California Gold Rush, Hotel Sutter is the epitome of historic boutique accommodations in the middle of a booming wine region.

1850 Wine Cellars
The story of 1850 Wine Cellars as a winery, mirrors the spirit of the early settlers and viticultural pioneers in many ways.
Born of a small group of friends and acquaintances that shared a deep desire to be a part of modern wine history,
1850 began with a shared vision of exploring the gold country areas of Amador, Fairplay and El Dorado to put down roots… just like the early settlers.
Yorba is the result of tradition, experience and passion combining to produce outstanding wines,
each one unique, but all with a strong connection to the land on which they’re grown.

Visit Amador’s Shenandoah Valley
This wonderful California region took flight during the Gold Rush of the 1850s.
As fortune seekers, many of them European, flocked to the Sierras to prospect for gold, small wineries arose to help slake their thirst.
Within a few decades, there were over 100 wineries in the area known as the Mother Lode, more than any other region of California.
Some of the vineyards planted during that era survive to this day.
Many are drawn by the region’s rolling, sun-drenched hillsides, warm daytime temperatures, and volcanic, decomposed granite soils, ideal conditions for producing top-quality wine grapes. When their robustly flavored wines, especially zinfandel, began attracting the attention of wine lovers throughout California and the U.S., the historic Sierra Foothills wine region was born.
The wines produced from the vineyards in the Shenandoah Valley, home to some of the oldest vines in California and are renowned for their intense fruit and deep color.
